“All entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs are in it for this very reason: they want to improve the world and drive progress, and you can do the same through your everyday work.”

🏆I came across this article a few years ago and have read it several times since. This concept has inspired me and I have found nothing more rewarding than finding opportunities to be an “intrapreneur” within different roles. Supporting employees to be intrapreneurial also increases engagement and spurs innovation. When I reflect on the times that I have been most engaged in my work, it has been when I was an intrapraneur. When I reflect on the times that I have been least engaged and disgruntled, it’s when I felt like an employee. Being an intrapraneur is a mindset that we can all adopt in our everyday work.
Having built a successful business at the age of 16 I have contemplated becoming a full-time entrepreneur many times throughout my “adult career.” Being an entrepreneur and building your own business can be extremely rewarding and is an impressive feat. I admire those that have been willing to leave the security of full time work and take the leap into entrepreneurship, but I’ve found that being an intrapraneur can also be an extremely rewarding path as well.
Being part of a larger organization with talented individuals, significant budgets and industry leading resources definitely has its advantages. Naturally, large organizations need people to take ownership, lead initiatives and identify opportunities for innovation; so being an intrapraneur will not go unnoticed and will have a positive impact on your career trajectory. Be forward with your organization’s leadership about your desire to help be a leader within your organization and get exposure to new opportunities. If you aren’t transparent about your motivation to take on more and grow your career, people may assume that you are happy with the status quo.
Anyone can be an intrapraneur. Regardless of your industry, experience level or role; you can be someone that takes ownership, puts in the extra effort, develops better ways to do things and be a leader within your team and organization.
🤓I highly recommend this 1 minute read in the Harvard Business Review!
🎧If you enjoy the article above, I also recommend listening to this interview with prior Intuit CEO, Brad Smith, on the “Wisdom From The Top” podcast. I LOVE Intuit’s Mint platform and have been using it daily for over a decade to track finances and net worth. Nerdy, I know, but it is one of my favorite brands/products. It was exciting to hear how they have leveraged “intrapreneurship” to transform their company into what it has become.
