Learning About Money With Princesses

We visited Disney World and upon arriving were quickly reminded that Disney World is a for profit vacation destination owned by a corporation. Naturally, their sole motive is to squeeze every dollar possible out of you during your visit. My sensible and financially savvy daughter was all of a sudden wanting $30 Minnie headbands (you know, with the sparkly ears) and $40 trinkets from the gift shop.

I explained to her that she could pick one souvenir of her choice as a memento of the trip. She would pay for half of the souvenir from her allowance savings and I would pay for the other half. As usual, she requested to see my phone so she could see how much money she had stashed up. She all of a sudden put down the Minnie headband and decided she better do some comparison shopping before she made such a big commitment.

After keeping her eye out while walking by the kiosks over the next two days, she confidently decided that she would get a Rumpunsel figurine playset for $28 ($14 split between her and me). She was pleased with her choice and unlike the many other kids at Disney World, didn’t ask for another single thing.

Our trip to Disney ended up being great and we have so many fun memories with the kids. I honestly didn’t realize how much they loved all of the unique experiences until I heard them still talking about everything in vivid details weeks later!
